This guide is for wholesalers, paddle shops, rental fleets and sporting goods buyers sourcing kayaking backpacks in volume, with a focus on the larger 28–60 litre sizes used for touring and kayak camping. It explains which specifications decide whether a kayaking backpack works in both roles, how to build a size assortment, and what to expect on MOQ, lead time and testing. It is based on over 20 years of making welded waterproof bags at our factories in Dongguan, China and Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam.
Job One: On the Kayak
On the boat, shape matters more than capacity. A tall, narrow backpack stands up behind the seat, catches wind and shifts when the kayak rolls; a lower, flatter or semi-circular body sits in the tank well and stays put under the bungees. Attachment points matter just as much. Paddlers clip their bag to deck lines or bungees, so welded D-rings or webbing loops at both ends let the bag be secured in two places rather than hanging from one loop. A bag that is only attached at the top handle will swing and work loose in rough water.
Visibility and buoyancy are the other two on-water requirements. High-visibility colours such as yellow and orange make a bag easy to spot if it goes overboard, and a sealed bag with air inside floats. A side-mounted inflate and deflate valve, like the one on our SL-E977 kayak backpacks, lets the user add air for buoyancy on the water and press it out again so the bag packs small in a hatch or a car boot. It is a gear-recovery feature, not a flotation aid for people, and it should be described that way.
Job Two: On the Paddler's Back
On land, a kayaking backpack is often carried while the paddler is wet, for short but awkward distances, sometimes over rocks and slippery ground. Padded shoulder straps, a sternum strap and, on larger sizes, a waist strap keep the load stable. A moulded EVA back panel is especially well suited to paddling: it is comfortable, holds the waterproof shell away from the back, and, unlike open-cell foam, does not soak up water and stay heavy and wet after a capsize. Paddling reviewers consistently praise padded straps and a firm back panel on dry backpacks for exactly this reason.
The harness has to be attached without compromising the waterproof shell. On our kayak backpacks, straps are sewn onto reinforcing patches that are welded to the body, so no stitch passes through the waterproof layer. The same principle is explained in more detail in our guide to dry bag backpacks.
Sizes for a Wholesale Assortment
The single most common question from wholesale buyers is which sizes to stock. In our experience, a kayaking backpack range works best with three tiers. A 20–30 litre bag covers day paddles: a change of clothes, lunch, a first aid kit and valuables, which is what most rental and recreational customers carry. A 35–40 litre bag covers overnight trips and colder days when extra layers are needed. A 50–60 litre bag covers kayak camping and expeditions, where a sleeping bag and tent have to travel on the boat and then be carried to camp.
The large sizes behave differently from the small ones. A full 60 litre bag is heavy, so it needs a waist strap, strong anchors and a reinforced base, and it may not fit behind the seat of a smaller sit-on-top, which is why touring paddlers often split a load between a large backpack in the hull and a smaller one on deck. Our guide to kayak bag features covers how shape and size interact with different boats.
Access, Organisation and the Window
The roll-top closure is the right choice for kayaking backpacks because it is simple, reliable and easy to rinse clean of sand. Its weakness is access: everything goes into one compartment, and reviewers' main criticism of otherwise well-liked kayaking backpacks is the lack of organisation. A welded clear window for a phone, an external pocket for keys and snacks, and a recommendation to use small dry pouches inside solve most of this without adding seams to the waterproof chamber.
Material for Salt, Sun and Sand
Kayaking backpacks spend their lives wet, in the sun and rubbing against hulls and rocks. 500D PVC tarpaulin of around 0.5 mm is tough, easy to clean and cost-effective, and it is the standard for most of our kayak backpacks. TPU-laminated fabric is lighter and stays flexible in cold water, which suits touring and higher-priced ranges. Whichever material is chosen, the base and the contact points take the most abrasion and benefit from reinforcement, and buckles and D-rings should be specified to resist salt water. Our kayak dry bag material guide explains the trade-offs.

How We Test Kayaking Backpacks
Every order passes through IQC on incoming fabric, valves and hardware, IPQC during welding and sewing, and OQC on finished bags, with SGS or QIMA third-party inspection available on request. Because a kayaking backpack is both carried and strapped to a moving boat, the strap anchors and D-rings are tested for tensile and bonding strength, and the bag goes through a load test of 1,500+ cycles. Buckles, D-rings and valves go through salt spray testing, fabrics are checked for abrasion resistance, and colour fastness and colour difference are checked against the approved sample, which matters for high-visibility colours. Roll-top backpacks rated IPX7 go through a full water-immersion test of 2+ hours. For valve-equipped bags, buyers can follow our customer inspection procedure: unboxing, vacuum extraction, a 24-hour static rest and air-leak determination, which confirms that the valve, window and seams all hold air.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the MOQ for wholesale kayaking backpacks?
300 to 500 pieces per style depending on the model. Colours can usually be split within an order, with a minimum per colour confirmed in the quotation.
How long does a wholesale order take?
Samples take about 7–15 days and bulk production about 30–45 days. For a spring paddling season, orders placed in late autumn or early winter arrive comfortably in time.
Which sizes sell best for kayaking?
20–30 litres for day paddles is the volume seller. 35–40 litres suits overnight trips, and 50–60 litres is for kayak camping and expeditions.
Will a kayaking backpack float?
A sealed backpack with air inside will usually float, and a valve lets the user add more air. It helps recover gear that goes overboard, but it is not a personal flotation device.
Can it go underwater?
Our roll-top kayak backpacks are rated IPX7 when closed with at least three full rolls, which covers capsizes and short immersion. External pockets are not waterproof, so valuables belong in the main compartment.
Can you add our logo and colours?
Yes. Screen printing, heat transfer and welded patches all work on PVC and TPU, and we can match Pantone colours. High-visibility colours are recommended for at least part of the bag.
