PVC Tarpaulin: Structure and Value
PVC tarpaulin is the workhorse of the welded tote, and its main advantage for this shape is one people overlook: firmness. Standard grades can also yellow or degrade faster under prolonged sun unless a UV-stabilised grade is specified — a real consideration for a beach tote.

TPU is the more modern material and wins where a tote is carried daily or lives outdoors. It's lighter and softer, noticeably more flexible — staying supple down to around −50°C where PVC turns brittle — and it offers better abrasion resistance thanks to its elasticity. The trade-off is cost.
TPU-Coated Canvas: The Retail Compromise
Plain canvas looks right for a lifestyle tote but behaves badly around water — it absorbs moisture, holds sand, and needs reinforcement and lining to cope. Coating canvas with TPU solves that: the bag keeps the natural canvas appearance a retail customer expects while gaining a genuine waterproof barrier and a wipe-clean surface. For a fashion or shopping tote that must look like canvas but survive a rain shower and a spilled drink, this is the answer.
PVC Mesh: When Drainage Beats Sealing
Mesh is the deliberate exception. It isn't waterproof and isn't meant to be — it's lightweight and breathable, and its point is that sand falls straight through rather than collecting in the bottom, and wet swimwear dries instead of stewing.
